May 30, 2022

Can you feel the summer air yet? The sunniest season is here, and that means there are plenty of activities to enjoy on or near the Ottawa River. Here are just a few of them.

  1. Fishing

The Ottawa River is the second largest river in Eastern Canada, which also makes it a prime fishing location. On the Upper Ottawa River you’ll find catfish, bullhead, crappies and more.

Every August, the community hosts Battle of The Bass, a fly-fishing event at the Pembroke Marina to raise money for mental health awareness programs.

  2. White Water Rafting

There is something special about the Ottawa River’s rapids. It’s an internationally famed spot for white water rafting, and different stretches of the river are perfect for all skills and comfort levels, whether you’re a hobbyist or a pro.

The season starts mid-June and runs to mid-September. Check out Rafting Momentum for exclusive packages for family and friends.

  3. Kayaking / Canoe

Looking for calmer waters, you can explore the shores of the Ottawa River by kayak or canoe, taking in the surrounded by forest and farmland. They are short routes set by Madawaska River Rentals, Ottawa Valley Canoe, and others but they offer spectacular views. The Ottawa Valley Canoe and Kayak company do it all from rentals, route guides and sales for those interested in paddling annually.

  4. ATV Trails

Join the ATV club and glide through the muddy paths in the Ottawa Valley. It operates across six trails and connecting paths with 1,500km to explore. The main Pembroke Trail is Barron Canyon Route that takes you through Petawawa to Laurentian Valley and end in Algonquin Park.

If you do not have an ATV, check out Come Wander where you can rent one for a guided tour or a free ride (as in, on your own, not at no cost). Note that you will need to rent a pass and read through the registration policy, so plan your trip ahead of time.

  5. Golf

The Valley has a range of golf courses to challenge and reward you. There’s Pembroke Golf Club, situated along the Ottawa River with a 6,730-yard championship course.

The Petawawa Golf Club, is another challenging golf course and a certified member of the Audubon Conservation Society, striving to be environmentally friendly with everything that they do.

Island Brae Golf Club in Quebec was established in 1950. It’s a 9-hole course full of historic charm.
