With more people doing their holiday shopping online, the City of Pembroke has designated new “community safety zones” where people can pick up or sell items from private online transactions.
At the beginning of December, the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP announced the new initiative. Several designated parking spots outside the OPP station at 77 International Drive have been marked with a handshake symbol.
These safe trade spots will be open at any time of day or night and don’t require appointments.
The idea is to move “online transactions away from secluded parking lots, personal residences or other areas and bringing them to a public place,” it said in an OPP press release.
While officers won’t be observing the transactions, they are nearby and available if a transaction becomes a criminal matter.
In 2021, the City of Pembroke was ranked as the best place to live in the Ottawa Valley by Macleans Magazine. Today, it continues to live up to its status, by making the safety of its community members a top priority.
